drano.

after school today i walked into my bathroom,  looked in the mirror, and noticed a ladybug attached to my shirt. it wouldn't have been surprising if i'd been standing on the ladybug infested field at bonanza, but in my house? kind of a shocker. in a drastic measure i flicked it off into the sink. not having the patience to walk upstairs and set it free, and not having the heart to kill it, i chose the slightly less cruel path of action and rinsed it down the sink. little did i know, apparently i was in need of a lesson on karma. a couple hours later, after enjoying some jamba and a beautiful day at rainbow park, i rushed home to get ready for my track meet. and there, crawling around my sink, was the ladybug! it had traversed its way up the pipes and back to freedom all on its tiny little insect legs. i was impressed, but slightly creeped out. don't judge me for what i did next. as i said, i was in a rush. but impulse told me to turn the faucet on again and run it for longer. clearly the little bugger would be happier in the adventurous lands of the sewer! so i left, a little nervous that i'd come home to an army of ladybugs in my bed waiting to attack. when i got home three and a half hours later, who do you think was doing laps at the bottom of my sink? the red champion himself. i figured that if it was in love with me that bad, the least i could do was give him (everyone knows ladybugs are menfolk) a chance at freedom. and so i named him Drano, and bequeathed unto him one of the holes on our backyard putting green as a home, where he now proudly resides, a stronger bug for the hardships he's endured.

need further proof i'm kind of a freak?

i slept like a baby last weekend through a night of 45 mph winds on a cow pie covered dirt bed in a sleeping bag that barely kept me warm. my first pioneer trek was one not soon to be forgotten! spent a brutal night laughing with these three girls, then kori showed up in the morning fresh from gv prom to sing us into good spirits as we crossed and re-crossed rivers, pushed and pulled our lovely handcart up hills, and mostly just tried to keep up with the boys who insisted on doing most of the work. what on earth would i do without men in my life? i'd be utterly useless. and far less entertained. overall, i enjoyed myself very much and certainly came to feel for those inspiring saints who first came westward! wind was probably nothing compared to what they dealt with. i am undoubtedly in awe of each of them.

today marked a sad commencement of something that has played a vital part in shaping my last four years of athleticism. as of today i am no longer a member of the bonanza high school track & field jumping team. although i am a captain on said team, i didn't quite qualify for regionals this year, so my season ended with our meet today. i was thinking i'd be somewhat overjoyed to get back the freedom of my afternoons, so i was surprised when i got real depressive walking to the car after doing my last official jump ever and then talking to coach robertus for a while. i love track! i love the jumpers, we have the most fun of anyone out there, and i'm going to miss that.

despite my shortcomings in crucial areas such as speed and strength, i've come a LONG way from freshman year, and somehow managed to become a pretty solid contributor. consistent at best, but sometimes that's all we needed. i am an average athlete. but i excel at being average. that's been one of my self-discovery type things over the years. i have learned from lots of experience that i am happy being undistinguished as long as i'm doing it to the very best of my capabilities.

so here's to getting burnt at meets, being shown up by every black girl in las vegas, backflips on the high jump pit, sand-filled running shoes, "may-suring" out our approaches, practices when coach tried to act eighteen again, fighting for one cool down lap, awesome sock tan lines, peeling oranges in the stands, dying of laughter, and trying to make these weak ankles do something decent with their lives. i'll miss it all.

drama beats.

thus nearly concludes the most controversial week in my high school career. maybe even my life career. i managed to make it this far without any such dramatics, and now in my last month and a half of high school, i got hit with a major facial..as lays would say. i don't handle difficult situations like these very well. in fact, i hate them with a passion. but, i'm sick of feeling like crap, and although things haven't been solved as smoothly as i'd wish, all will eventually be well. i'm ready to put it behind me. my boys from JEW said it best: "if i don't let myself be happy now, then when? if not now, when?" so that's what i'm doing, letting myself be happy.

happy because...
-me and my girl j-lev are officially residents of david john hall come fall.
-we got the same exact room that marquez inhabited this year, so it's sure to bring us extra luck!
-this track season, while not yet up to expectations, has been a success.
-i rode my bike to the gym yesterday and got real excited to have that as my main form of transportation next year.
-i kicked butt on my book quiz for mast even though i read the book in december.
-kori brought me amish pretzels!!!!!
-we continued the tradition of dinner at applebee's after the last home meet of the year.
-i enjoyed a "zesty" quesadilla burger.
-i fell asleep at 8:00 last night! and that is nothing short of a miracle.
-i survived an entire freakin hot bikram yoga class with kb. probably one of the hardest things i've ever done.
-i have friends who are willing to talk me through anything and who really love me and know i love them.
-this one kid is real real good to me all the time :).
-this unnecessarily stressful prom situation is finally pretty much resolved!!

call me naive, but i am going to continue avoiding anything upsetting for now, because truthfully i enjoy being blissfully unaware of drama. because everyone is happy and nice and friendly and helpful and has generally good intentions, right?? that's what i thought. on that note, i am thrilled to say that i will be joining jessica and kori's ward tomorrow on their pioneer trek! if you knew me well enough you would not be that surprised that i am so anxiously looking forward to hiking ten miles in a homemade skirt while pulling a handcart. i'm weird like that. idiosyncratic in fact. to use a word from the ap english review today. bring on the absence of pesky electronics, i was born to sing pioneer songs and escape the 21st century!

before i keel over dead.

Taken from my purple notebook:
A little while ago, for the first time in months, Student Council actually contributed something positive to my life. It was in the form of an assignment to make a list of things I want to do before I die. I made an attempt at one of these over the summer when we were at the beach, but Kori got a hold of it and added the word “naked” to the end of most of them, and I got off task. However, I have decided to document this complete version as it stands at age 18, and entitle it the same way that my sweet Marquez entitled the original…

i love having brothers.

As I sat at the counter this morning eating a delicious stack of blueberry pancakes...

coop stain: "Jess guess what I lost another tooth!"
myself: "Sweet! I didn't even know you had one loose."

Ten minutes later I found out Riley had knocked out said tooth.

his excuse: "He called me roly-poly-oly and it made me mad so i punched him in the face!"

Violent little boys are freakin funny.

And my hand looks freakin weird in this picture. Awesome.

oh hey.

Well...reluctantly, here I am. For once in my life I am the first person awake in the house, so I am making a very risky move. I have been fascinated with the w.o.b., world of blogs NOT wife of bath, for about a year now. I realize that I am not the conventional blog person. I have no kids or recipes to be excited about, and I'm not even yet in college so I can be missed.. hopefully. The few people who will take interest in this are probably sick enough of me as it is, so for that I apologize. Despite my hesitation towards doing this, I for some reason feel it justifiable to document some aspects of my life on this here part of the internet. Expect no consistency. If sporadic writing in my asian-inspired journal, moleskine, purple book of life, happy book, and church notebook aren't enough, I am now beginning another inconsistant archive to help my alzheimers. In case you didn't know, I have the mind and sometimes joints of an 80 year old woman. So, forgive my rambling, because it's not going to stop, and hope that I can make this into something somewhat read-able, if not interesting.

I am currently nestled in bed, not just any bed, but a heavenly cloud of perfect temperature sheets and a duvet cover lined in satin, looking out the six large windows in my room at gorgeous park city. I am obsessed. In two and a half days I have fallen in love with this town. The trees, the snow, the perfect little wood-panneled homes.. I could probably stay here forever. One of my dad's good friends offered a while ago to let us use his house here for spring break, but pulling in the driveway we had no idea how nice it would be! Hello mountain mansion, good luck dragging me out of this place.

Yesterday i experienced my #3 best snowboarding day ever. Perfect weather, incredible snow, HUGE mountain. This was my first time ever snowboarding anywhere but Brian Head, and as much as I love the BH, I soon realized how limited I have been. I was out there from 9:30 to 4:30 and never did the same run more than twice. I was in heaven! Snowboarding is by far my favorite pasttime. I've been called a kamikaze, minus the killing people and myself.. so perhaps that is a bad analogy, but pretty much I like going fast. Speed is my thing. Speed and snow. I had to apologize to my parents for making them feel their age a bit more than usual, cause they had to keep up with me after they dropped the little boys off with grandma. But hey, the hot tub can fix that, right?

Cool story. We ate lunch at this little restaurant at the top of the mountain, and my mom being the stalker she is (kidding!), noticed this cute little old man in a blue sweater standing in line and we came to the agreed conclusion that it was Russell M. Nelson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in our church, skiing with his family. While my dad was waiting for our food he told Elder Nelson how great it was to see him out enjoying himself, just as good as seeing him in General Conference this past weekend. Then a few minutes later he walked by our table and said hello to our family. When he shook my little brother's hands, Riley acted shy and Cooper turned to my dad and loudly mouthed "Who is he?" While my mom was explaining, Elder Nelson shook my hand and laughingly said, "She's the one who knows." I loved that. I thought about it all day. I AM the one who knows. I'm one of the lucky people in this world with a testimony that this man, and President Monson, and the rest of the apostles, are called of God to witness of Christ. They are prophets and revelators in our time, and i love them so much. I'm so glad that I KNOW, and I hope that as I get older and more brave I won't keep that knowledge to myself so much.

I will now end with a shout out to my boy Cooper, my favorite little basketball fan, whose insane memory allows him to know more about sports at age seven then I could ever hope to. I loved watching the National Championship game with him last night. As boring of a blow-out as it was (I may or may not have fallen asleep), we love those Tar Heels! I am already mourning the void in my life that will be there until college basketball starts again. At which point I will be a Rebel fan in BYU land. Hate on me if you must, I'm not backing down.
